“YOUR VOICE”

Freedom of Public Information

Democracy is built upon the power of the people to know what is happening, and then to be able to act upon that information.

There should be no secrets kept from us citizens by the government except for the information that our enemies could use to destroy us.  Each of us has the right to know what is truthfully being done by the government as it would affect our lives.

If this fails, democracy is in jeopardy.  We are all in danger of falling under tyranny.

Our founders, who drafted the Constitution of this great nation knew that, and they enacted a structure of government to ensure that we citizens were the custodians of the knowledge of the government, that we knew as much as our elected leaders.

This isn’t the case any longer.  We are failing at our right to know and understand what is happening in our nation.  Increasingly we are denied the facts of governance, under the mantra of “national security.”  This is no justification for denial of information to the people of the one truly free nation on earth.  If we persist on this course we shall become no better than the worst dictatorial countries of the world, whose leaders practice any activities they want under the security of clandestine operations and the denial of reality.

Certainly, there are elements of information that we must hold secure lest they become assets to our enemies.  Certainly, our enemies are more diffuse now, no longer centered in a few large nations.  But, to classify all citizens as potential enemies and thereby deny us the right to know what is actually happening in this country, is to destroy the very fabric of democracy, the information base upon which the voter must base his or her opinion.

In Congress, I will demand that every citizen have the right to know everything that is happening in this country unless that information is a direct threat to our security or a benefit to one of our enemies.
