Revitalization of Our Communities

The American home town is in danger of extinction.  The combination of fast transportation, interstate highways and the intrusion of the mega discount stores is destroying the traditional fabric of our communities. These threats to our communities are all good things in themselves.  But the combination has proven to be an uncontrollable force of destruction for our small towns and rural communities.

The issue is that the basic fabric of our human environment is disappearing and leaving an aura of discontent in our community relations.  The suburbs of America are the unfortunate creation of our need to congregate into working areas and of our dependence upon automobile transportation.

We find ourselves driving 30 minutes to get to a store.  The community stores are all gone.  We put our children on school busses for hour-long rides to consolidated mega-schools.  The community school and the ethic of community involvement are gone.  We are losing all of the character of our society and replacing it with the impersonal environment of economically driven isolation, distrust and fear.

It is not too late to stop the extinction of the American home town.  But salvation of the character of America won’t happen by itself.  The forces of our global economy are too strong.

We must put into place national programs of encouragement and support.  Tax relief for traditional community development and restitution is vital to this goal.   A revised tax structure that supports entrepreneurial development of business at the local level is essential to saving America.

I propose the development of a Small Community Rehabilitation Program much like the Small Business Innovation Research Program that would support the development of strong community economics.  The project would through tax advantages and cost sharing grants facilitate competition by rural establishments with the national and international establishments that are threatening our culture
